Introduction

This immersive learning program was developed with Limestone Coast Training, a South Australia–based registered training organisation and a division of Limestone Coast Work Options (a disability employment service provider).

Limestone Coast Training delivers nationally accredited vocational education and training across aged care, disability support and community services, with multiple facilities across South Australia, primarily along the Limestone Coast.

To expand and strengthen its existing face-to-face delivery, Limestone Coast Training partnered with Start Beyond to introduce scenario-based learning into their aged care training and disability support courses for current and future aged care workers.

The VR training program was designed to equip workers with strategies for identifying moments of duty of care and dignity of risk, and implementing the appropriate response with confidence.

The challenge

How could Limestone Coast Training help support workers improve the quality of care they provide to older Australians and persons with disabilities by prioritising the rights of the individual?

The solution

An immersive, facilitator-led program was created to train and test the disability and aged care workforce, while meeting the 2025 standards for training and assessment as per ASQA requirements. It supports accessible classroom-based education while giving learners a safe space to practise challenging real-world scenarios.

Development of an immersive training product

Start Beyond worked with Limestone Coast Training subject matter experts to develop training modules that build essential care skills, particularly where nuance and human judgment are difficult to replicate through traditional classroom methods or role play.

Users are led through branching narratives to complete four modules which assess their ability to provide the appropriate responses to common aged care and disability situations.

Presenter-led learning model

Delivered through a facilitator-led model, one trainer can guide a classroom of up to 28 learners using a single control interface. It includes analytics reporting capability and supports classroom-based delivery, learner monitoring and integration with existing learning management systems.

Training can be completed using VR headsets or tablets which enable delivery at scale while supporting shared learning through guided discussion.

Simulated real-world care scenarios

The VR training program draws on real care situations and everyday decision-making to simulate crucial learning outcomes. Each experience features real people captured in 360° video, placing learners directly inside complex, realistic care environments, allowing them to practise interpersonal skills while avoiding emotional and physical risk.

The modules are designed to give learners space to slow down, observe and think through complex care situations, helping them build confidence in how they respond before encountering these moments in practice.

The Result

The VR learning solution was successfully implemented within Limestone Coast Training’s accredited delivery framework, demonstrating that immersive VR learning can operate at full classroom scale while supplementing and enhancing existing programs.

Incorporated into existing classroom delivery, it supports 5 units of competency across Certificate 3 in Individual Support (Ageing or Disability) and Certificate 3 in Active Volunteering.

Additionally, upon successful completion, users have a micro-credential that’s applicable within a range of Certificate 2 and 4 aged care, disability and individual support modules.

As learners progress through each module, results are captured in a report that Limestone Coast Training can upload to their learning management system to support assessment and credential validation in line with ASQA requirements.

The project was partially funded by the South Australian Government through an Equipment and Capital Grant, and formally presented in early 2026 to the Department of State Development’s Skills SA.

It was positively received by Skills SA representatives, validating the approach as a credible and compliant model for immersive aged care and disability support training.

A proven model, now available as a plug-and play solution

The Limestone Coast Training VR program demonstrates how immersive technology can be seamlessly embedded into accredited vocational education. By combining subject matter expertise, immersive scenario design, and facilitator-led delivery, the project provides a practical example of how complex care concepts can be taught in ways that are scalable, engaging, inclusive and grounded in real-world practice.

Through close collaboration and supported by government funding, the program has established a foundation for immersive training that can inform future approaches to aged care and disability support education.

It’s been well-received by the team at Limestone Coast Training and its strong performance has informed the development of an off-the-shelf version, Sacadi VR, now available to other registered training organisations, aged care providers and disability support services across Australia.
