Dashwood3D Icon Design

About three months ago, Martin and I were working on a proposal to do an intimate 360 video shoot for an international music artist.
Dashwood3D Icon Design

I'm a massive fan of the "Strangers with Patrick Wilson" VR experience available for the Gear VR and I wanted to recreate the intimacy of the piece by shooting in Stereo 360. The scope of the project was daunting and exciting and we were keen to push our skills to the limit.

The brief was to come up with a logo design that illustrated the concept of editing in 360 degrees and previewing with a HMD. It needed to be simple, elegant and fit in with Dashwoods existing library of special effects plugins.

One of our biggest questions was "how do edit two 360 equirectangular video clips and visualise what it looked like in real time?" The thought of making blind editing decisions, exporting the clips and then watching the edit in the Oculus DK2, seemed like it would be a frustrating and time consuming process. It was around this time that I heard about Tim Dashwood's new StereoVR Toolbox plugin that would allow us to output our edit directly to the HMD* in real time. Yeah, in real-time! This seemed too good be true and signed up for the Beta.

The right place at the right time

In one of Tim's email updates he asked the beta group for ideas on a new icon design for the StereoVR Toolbox. In return, he would grant the best design with a production license to the best design. I really wanted the license as we could already see that it would have a huge impact on our production Adobe Premiere and After Effects workflow.

The brief was to come up with a logo design that illustrated the concept of editing in 360 degrees and previewing with a HMD. It needed to be simple, elegant and fit in with Dashwoods existing library of special effects plugins. Working with the designer who created the StartVR logo we came up with an concept that matches the brief and could represent the application for years. We were ecstatic that Dashwood3D love the design and will be publishing it as the StereoVR Toolbox icon when the plugins come out of beta. We're also stoked to now have a license to use on our own projects. Thanks Tim!
