Starting the Start VR podcast

Have you been bitten by the VR bug? I know I have. Bitten hard in the butt, and now I can’t get enough. A couple of months ago I was reintroduced to virtual reality by way of the as-yet-to-be-released Samsung Gear VR and played Darkfield VR for the first time. I was hooked. Line and sinker. I knew in that moment that I simply had to become involved in developing VR, and all the immersive projects that I had dreamed up in the mid nineties all came flooding back to me, all wanting to get made.

  • But how do I get started?
  • What tools will I need?
  • What computer specification will I need to not get motion sickness?
  • What do people mean by the ‘screen door effect’?
  • How do I make a 360 video?
  • Should I learn Unity or Unreal Engine?
  • Is Cybernetic Bruce a real person?
  • Are we already strapped into the matrix and this reality is hologram? speaking of hologram, is that Hololens an actual “Help me Obiwan Kenobi” style hologram?
  • How do I make binaural audio?
  • Why is the latency so bad with most demos and what the hell is IPD?

And that’s what this podcast is all about...

How to get started in VR. Have you been bitten so hard that you want to change your career? Are you a business wanting to know how VR can take you to a whole new level? Maybe you’re just curious about what it all means, what the future may look like and how you can experience it for yourself. I have exactly the same questions, and I’ll be honest with you, I don't know many of the answers, yet. But I’m going to find out and share everything I learn on the podcast. Warts and all.

The Start VR podcast

The podcast will be an ongoing series of audio episodes as documentary-style vignettes, with the occasional video thrown in for good measure. This means that each episode will cover a specific topic allowing it to stand on it’s own. With luck, the podcast will become a useful resource that is practical and insightful. I hope to interview and share the learnings from hardened VR professionals, prolific enthusiasts and emerging entrepreneurs.

Are you experienced?

If you’re an experienced VR developer, musician, animator, interface designer, filmmaker or entrepreneur, I would relish the opportunity to interview you and to share your experience with a wider audience. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned developer or you’re still working on your first demo, the journey of how you got to where you are today could inspire a whole new generation.

Where do you want to go?

Are you an enthusiastic newcomer? Have you bought a DK2 but are unsure what to do next? Are you a mobile developer and you want to make the switch to VR but don’t know where to start? Are you simply inspired by the technology and just want to get involved? If so, I want to talk to you too. I want to learn what has motivated you to try something new and where the gaps are in your VR entrepreneurial plans. Shoot me a message on twitter via @Start_VR or leave a comment below.
